LAST SATURDAY, I WENT OVER TO THE FLOOR TALK FOR THE BLUE ROOM AT TE MANAWA (THE ART GALLERY PART) IN PALMERSTON NORTH. THE SHOW'S BEEN CURATED BY PIPPA SANDERSON AND FEATURES 13 ARTISTS LOOKING AT OCCULTISH OR SPIRITUAL THEMES, HEAVILY BASED ON VICTORIAN-ERA SPIRITUALISM, ALTHOUGH THERE WERE NO CONAN-DOYLE STYLE PHOTOGRAPHS OF CARDBOARD CUT-OUT PIXIES. THE WORK, WHICH IS ALL VERY CONSISTENT IN IT'S GROUPING, SEEMED TO BE A CONCERTED MOVE AWAY FROM THAT POST-COLONIAL AESTHETIC TO A SLACKER-CUM SKEPTICAL ART-VIEW OF THE VAGARIES OF THE ESOTERIC.
MY FAVOURITE GROUP OF WORK WAS BY 'EOS', WHICH REMINDED ME OF ASPECTS OF KENNETH ANGER'S LUCIFER RISING AND THE SYMBOLISM IN ALEJANDRO JODOROWSKY'S HOLY MOUNTAIN, A FANTASTIC FILM WHICH INCIDENTALLY, WAS BANK-ROLLED BY ROLLING STONES AND BEATLES MANAGER, ALLEN KLEIN, WHO PASSED AWAY A FORTNIGHT AGO.

THE GLAZING SESSION ON THURS NIGHT AT PAUL'S WENT WELL AND I RECEIVED A CALL YESTERDAY TO SAY THAT THE FIRST FIRING OF THE PIECES CAME THROUGH ENTACT. I'M DOING FOUR PLATES, ALL BASED ON MY RECENT RETABLOS. THE LAST PLATE IS A VERSION OF MY DARWIN RETABLO. I'VE BEEN PAINTING THE PLATES AT HOME, GOOD TO HAVE A SMALL BREAK FROM THE STUDIO.

NEXT TIME, I'LL USE HEAVY CARDBOARD AS THE PLY IS A BIT WEIGHTY WHEN ALL THE ART IS STACKED IN THE CRATE.

AROUND THIS TIME LAST YEAR, WE WERE HOUSESITTING FOR FRIENDS IN LAS VEGAS WHILE THEY WHERE TRAVELLING AROUND EUROPE. WE LOOKED AFTER THEIR TWO FRENCH BULLDOGS, MARCO AND LITTLE LUNA. IT WAS GOOD TIMES CRUISING AROUND IN THE CAR WITH THEM, TAKING THEM TO THE PARK FOR UNDERSIZED DOGS AND WATCHING LUNA NUT OFF AT BIRDS ON THE POWERLINES. MARCO HAD A PENCHANT FOR BARKING AT MARIACHI MUSIC. THE VID BELOW IS DOG TREAT TIME.

NEXT SATURDAY (THE 27TH) IS THE ANNIVERSARY OF PHILIP GUSTON'S BIRTH. HE WAS BORN IN 1913 AND DIED ON THE 7TH OF JUNE 1980. EVERY YEAR SINCE 1998, I'VE MADE A WORK THAT COMMEMORATES HIM AS AN ARTIST. BELOW IS ONE FROM 1999 THAT WAS EXHIBITED AT JANNE LAND GALLERY, WELLINGTON IN 2000 (I THINK?). I'LL TRY AND FIND THE SLIDES OF THE PREVIOUS ONES I'VE DONE.
I THINK I WILL DO A RETABLO THIS YEAR.
GUSTON'S WORK HAS BEEN IMPORTANT TO ME SINCE 6TH FROM AT HIGH SCHOOL, WHEN I STARTED READING ABOUT ABSTRACT EXPRESSIONISM IN ALL ITS FORMS FROM AROUND THE WORLD. IT WAS GUSTON'S PAINTING (ALONG WITH SCOTTISH ARTIST ALAN DAVIE) THAT MADE THE BIGGEST IMPRESSION ON ME.
IN EARLY 2003, JO AND I TRAVELLED AUSTRALIA TO LOOK AT ART IN SYDNEY, CANBERRA AND MELBOURNE. I SPECIFICALLY WANTED TO GO TO THE NGA IN CANBERRA AS THEY HAVE TWO GREAT EXAMPLES OF GUSTON'S LATE PAINTING, UNFORTUNATELY THEY WEREN'T ON DISPLAY AS THEY WERE PART OF THE LARGE TRAVELLING RETROSPECTIVE SET UP BY THE FORT WORTH MUSEUM IN TEXAS.
ABOUT A MONTH LATER, I RECEIVED THE ROYAL OVER-SEAS LEAGUE SCHOLARSHIP THAT ALLOWED ME TO TRAVEL TO THE UK TO PAINT FOR A MONTH IN SCOTLAND. I MANAGED TO CONVINCE THE ROSL ORGANISERS TO LET ME TRANSIT THROUGH THE USA BOTH WAYS, AND THEN TO HAVE JUST OVER A FORTNIGHT LAYOVER IN LA AND NEW YORK. I MANAGED TO GET UP TO SFMOMA TO SEE THE GUSTON RETROSPECTIVE, ALONG WITH LOSING MY LUGGAGE SOMEWHERE BETWEEN AUCKLAND AND LAX.
IT WAS WORTH IT.
LAST YEAR AT THE MORGAN LIBRARY IN NYC, I GOT TO SEE THE GUSTON DRAWING RETROSPECTIVE WHICH WAS A GREAT REFRESHER.

THE COMMON THREAD BEING ROWDY RODDY PIPER PLAYING THE LEAD IN BOTH AND THAT THEY BOTH HAVE WEIRD-ASS C-GRADE CREATURES RUNNING AROUND.

BAD NEWS ON THE DEVIL FRONT. HIS ANKLES GAVE OUT UNDER THE MASSIVE WEIGHT AND PRESSURE OF HIS BEER-GUT ON SATURDAY NIGHT. SOME OF IT IS SALVAGEABLE BUT I'LL NEED TO STREAMLINE THE DEVIL SO THE WEIGHT IS ON HIS WINGS AND TAIL.

THE EX-VOTO'S BEEN PAINTED OVER AN EXISTING RETABLO OF LA SAGRADA FAMILIA (BELOW- I'VE PHOTOSHOPPED A RETABLO DEPICTING THIS IMAGE OVER THE TOP OF THE EX-VOTO IN BLACK AND WHITE). I'M INTERESTED IN THE REUSING OR RECYCLING OF DEVOTIONAL PAINTINGS AS IT ILLUSTRATES THAT THESE IMAGES WERE ABUNDANT IN MEXICO AT THE TIME, YET IT CONTRADICTS THE POTENT NATURE OF THE SUBJECT MATTER. ANOTHER GREAT EXAMPLE OF THIS RECYCLING IS IN GLORIA FRASER GIFFORDS' BOOK MEXICAN FOLK RETABLOS. IT DEPICTS A RETABLO OF VERONICA'S VEIL THAT'S BEEN CUT UP TO MAKE TEMPLATES FOR THE SOLES OF LEATHER SANDALS. I'LL HUNT IT OUT FOR NEXT WEEK'S POST.
